UGANDA Cricket Association has confirmed that it is legal for women to play in the men’s league, either as a team or in combination with males.

Last weekend, Tornado fielded female player Consy Aweko in their Division I league match on Sunday which they lost by 8 wickets to KICC.

They had earlier fielded Franklyn Najjumba in the Twenty20 tournament —raising questions as to whether the rules permit such a scenario.

Under the written cricket laws, nothing is clear about mixed teams.

However, UCA administrator John Trust Mayeku explained yesterday.

“The umpires decide and it is in their belief that since it doesn’t give due advantage to the team if they field a woman, then they can be fielded. That is what Tornado is doing.”
