DESIRE Birungi Obua will today lead NIC Netball Club as they aim to defend the title at the 16th edition of East and Central Africa Club Championships scheduled from April 29 to May 4 in Zanzibar.

David Namunyala reports that the 22-year old daughter of the late Denis Obua, replaces Betty Namukasa who led the side to their sixth title in a row in Nairobi, Kenya last year. Namukasa is on maternity leave.

“We shall miss her command but it does not mean we can’t get a replacement” said NIC coach Margret Bisereko during the team’s final training at Nakivubo yesterday.

A contingent of 14 players and three officials will depart this evening by road, three days to the kick-off date. Bisereko said the team needed some time at the venue to adapt to the environment.

Other Ugandan teams for the week-long event include last year’s runners-up Prisons and Police.
