EDITOR: It has been a sigh of relief for most of my colleagues and others who were anxiously expecting to be appointed ministers.

Two points of excitement for me are the appointment of the Prime Minister, Amama Mbabazi who I have had the pleasure to work with very closely. He is an excellent choice for the post because he is very hardworking, focused and aggressive for results.

The second and most important appointment for me and the people I represent is Janet Museveni to the Karamoja affairs ministry. It is quite a task to minister to the people of that unique region with its challenges and opportunities.

I wish to thank the First Lady for once again accepting to join hands with the NRM, the political leaders and the people of Karamoja to continue to work towards the realisation of sustainable development in the region. In the last three years, Janet Museveni initiated a number of very critical projects.

Food production in the region was increased through the provision of quick-maturing and drought resistant seeds, agricultural tools and opening of large swathes of agricultural acreages and water harvesting projects for livestock.

In the health sector she refocused Government, development agencies and the local leadership towards addressing issues of maternal and child mortality and increasing access to sanitation facilities.

She successfully campaigned for the outlawing of the hitherto rampant female genital mutilation leading to the passing of a private members Bill against the practice. Through her support, girls' boarding schools were established.
