AFTER a disastrous performance that had Uganda relegated from the Division II World Cricket League in April, there is another chance for the team to pick themselves up, when they take part in the Twenty-20 World Cup qualifiers. The finals will be staged in Sri Lanka next year.

Ghana, Nigeria, Uganda, Namibia and Kenya will be competing in the tournament to be hosted at Lugogo, Kyambogo and the Entebbe ovals.

Uganda will play host to the Africa region qualifiers due July 8-13, after confirmation by the International Cricket Council (ICC). There had earlier been concerns raised by the international body about the security situation in the country following the ‘walk to work’ protests.

“They wanted to shift the tournament to another country, but we assured them after the situation normalised. We will not let them down,” said Uganda Cricket Association (UCA) chief executive officer Justine Ligyalingi at a press conference at Lugogo yesterday.

The top two teams from the regional event will advance to the final round of qualifiers that will have associate members.

A half century by veteran Bharat Ghodadra was still a bit too small as it failed to save KICC from defeat, as they fell to Nile in the national Division I league on Sunday.
