HAVING donned the black and yellow Rugby Cranes jersey for 12 years, 32-year-old Robert Seguya’s word of caution ahead of the Group 1B Africa Cup could not have come at a better time.

The tournament, involving three countries kicks off at Kyadondo club on Sunday.

Seguya reckons there is no room for complacency when the Cranes face Zimbabwe and Madagascar.

The flanker whose power, pace and bravery (despite his ‘advanced’ age) have endeared him to fans, particularly has bitter memories about the Zimbabwe Sables that Cranes face in the opening game.

“I broke an arm in 2007 when we faced Zimbabwe in the Africa Cup. They play hardcore rugby so we have to be ready for a tough contest. They always give us a run for our money,” Seguya warned.

A sizeable number of the Sables squad play for South African clubs.

The bald-headed Seguya also cautioned about the pace of Madagascar whom the Cranes beat in the final of the Confederation African Rugby (CAR) Cup in 2007.

“Madagascar is even tougher. We all saw how they gave us a run here last year. We beat them but they had a better game and they brought bigger boys to match us,” he stated.

The veteran player commended the technical team of Yayiro Kasasa, Fred Mudoola, Peter Magona and Herbert Wafula.

New Cranes kit
Team coach Kasasa is impressed with the players’ response in training, adds Johnson Were

“We are emphasising basics like tackling hard and low, defending the ball in rucks and communication on the pitch,” Kasasa stated after Nile Breweries handed over a sh18m home and away kit to the team at the rugby union secretariat at Lugogo.

Receiving the kit from brand manager Timothy Kayondo, URU head of marketing and sponsorship Martin Kasasira commended the company for the continued support.
