THE judgment date for an election petition against Tororo municipality Member of Parliament Sanjay Tanna has been set for July 25.

Justice Rugadya Atwooki, who is holding a special session in Tororo, made the announcement on Monday.

Atwooki is handling parliamentary election petitions from Busia and Tororo districts.

Apollo Ofwono Yeri, who came second in the February 18 parliamentary elections, is challenging the election of Tanna, alleging that he does not have the minimum academic qualifications to contest for the seat.

Yeri is being represented by Hassan Kamba, Asuman Basalirwa, Muhumuza Kawe and Joseph Kyazze.

Tanna and his lawyer, Alfred Oryem Okello, who also represented the Electoral Commission, were present in court.

During court proceedings that lasted about four hours, lawyers from both parties agreed to make their submission without cross examining witnesses.

In his submission, Kamba said there were inconsistencies in Tanna’s academic documents.

He said in the voters’ register, Tanna registered as Sanjay Tanna.

Kamba said both the O’ and A’ level certificates that Tanna presented for nomination bore the names Sanjay Gokaldas Tanna.

“I am inclined to conclude that Sanjay Tanna and Sanjay Gokaldas Tanna are two different people,” said Kamba.

But Tanna’s lawyer said Uganda National Examination Board has verified and found his client’s academic papers to be authentic. He said court should dismiss the case with costs.
