FOLLOWING a terror alert issued by our Counter-Terrorism Directorate, some politicians distressed the Uganda Police Force by dismissing the warning as a ruse by the Police to prevent them from holding rallies and demos. This is astonishing!

Whatever shade of political opinion you might belong to, let us unite on one mission; to ensure that we do not hand the terrorists a cheap victory.

Whereas we cannot permit terrorist to force us to change our way of life, we need your cooperation to make sure that we all stay safe. This will require greater vigilance on your part to ensure that the terrorist do not win.

The Police have issued important tips on how you can participate in thwarting terrorism and here are some of them.

Identify suspicious persons and articles within your environs and alert the police or closest local authority.

Become your brother’s keeper and make sure an unprotected neighbourhood does not cause you grief. If your neighbour is bombed you will also not be alive to tell the story.

Facilities and premises that attract large numbers of people are strongly encouraged to use screening equipment like metal detectors and handheld x-ray machines.

Further more managers of fuel supply stations, especially within the city and urban centres should not permit their premises to be turned into parking lots. The innocent extension of parking facilities is much welcomed by car-bombers.

On the opposition’s suspicion that this alert has been designed to scare them, the Assistant Inspector General of Police Byakagaba disclosed that the Inspector General of Police and senior police commanders, including him, had met various opposition leaders over the matter.

Lastly, the media has a crucial role in keeping the public security alert without causing alarm. The media’s importance in this mission cannot be over-emphasised.

Together, we shall make terrorism expensive for the terrorists. Let us not drop our guard, the ears and eyes, to hand them a cheap and undeserved victory.
