A total of 120 people who turned up for the UPDF recruitment exercise at Wakiso district headquarters were yesterday turned away.

Capt. Tabaro Kiconco, the air forces and recruitment exercise spokesperson, said 120 applicants were disqualified because they had false academic papers, were medically unfit and others were over-aged.

“All applicants had to have a medical checkup and present their academic papers for scrutiny. In addition, recruits had to run 7km to test their physique” Kiconco said.

Kiconco reported positive progress because they worked closely with local leaders, the district security officer and the Police.

He said the local leaders helped in recommending and mobilising the youth to avoid malpractice and identifying criminals who may want to join the force. Lt. Col. Sam Kakuru, the director of personnel in the land forces, said they recruited people to serve in different departments of the UPDF, including land and the air force.

The minimum requirements for recruits is Ordinary or Advanced level.

The minimum requirements for cadets is a bachelors degree. About 40 graduates and 25 diploma holders applied for cadet posts. “This people are subjected to all sorts of tests, including an aptitude to test to gauge their reasoning capacity,” Kakuru said.

The recruits would be taken for nine-month training at Kaweweta in Nakaseke district before they are posted to different army units to serve the country.

Kakuru cautioned those intending to join the army against presenting false academic papers.

One of the applicants said she applied because she was interested in the army’s discipline and conduct.

Another applicant said she applied because she wanted to serve the nation.
