THE First Lady and Minister for Karamoja Affairs, Janet Museveni, has urged Ugandans to actively participate in the battle against poverty.

Over the weekend, Mrs. Museveni observed that it was the responsibility of the Government to ensure poverty eradication, peace and prosperity.

She, however, said this could only be achieved if the communities own and vigilantly monitor all government programmes.

“The battle of the gun was fought by soldiers, but the battle of poverty has to be fought by both leaders and the communities,”she said.

Mrs. Museveni made the remarks during the thanksgiving celebrations for the Karamoja affairs state minister Barbara Nekesa Oundo held at Busia Integrated Primary School on Saturday.

Mrs. Museveni said ensuring poverty eradication and prosperity for all are achieved instead of just words remaining on paper was a challenge to the NRM and its leaders.

She observed that since independence, the NRM was the only government to have fought for the uplifting of individuals through its people-centred programmes.
Mrs. Museveni cited programmes such as UPE, USE, NAADS, PFA and Micro Finance Credit, which she said were geared towards improving ordinary Ugandans.

She added that by abolishing graduated tax, the Government had also freed its people to work for the development of their families.

Mrs. Museveni reiterated the need to improve household incomes saying it would be meaningless for Government to develop infrastructure like electricity which people cannot extend to their homes because of poverty.

She, therefore, encouraged the people to utilise existing programmes like NAADS to start up income-generating activities at the household level and improve their livelihoods.

Mrs. Museveni thanked the people of Busia for electing President Museveni and the NRM back into power.
She also thanked them for the blessing of Oundo whom she was optimistic would help address the challenges in Karamoja.

Mrs. Museveni urged communities to join hands with their elected leaders to uplift the country so that the future generation finds a better, united and peaceful Uganda.

Oundo said the people of Busia recognised and appreciated President Yoweri Museveni’s efforts to transform their district since its inception. She thanked the people of Busia for electing her and pledged to actively participate in achieving the NRM manifesto.

She said she was ready to be mentored and was committed to seeing Uganda move forward.

Her husband, Charles Oundo, commended the people of Busia for voting the NRM.
