FIVE people from the same family were struck dead by lightning at Kadinindi village in Buvuma town council in Buvuma district.

Buvuma resident district commissioner Apollo Bwebale said the incident occurred on Tuesday morning at 12:30am during a heavy downpour.

The deceased were identified as Godfrey Mayende, 30 and his wife, Ruth Athieno, 28, who were fast asleep when the incident happened.

Their children included Night Nabwire, 2, Shadrack Magero, 4 and Ronald Othieno, 6.

Bwebale said lightning struck the family’s grass-thatched hut, killing the occupants instantly.

He said this was the first incident to occur in the area since cases of lightning were reported countrywide.

Bwebale added that the Police visited the scene and a post-mortem examination was conducted on the bodies.

He said the area had not received rain for some time.
