The youth in Karamoja have asked local leaders to involve them in making policies. Moroto and Napak districts youth representatives said it was wrong to leave out young people when making policies that directly affect their lives such as the National Youth Policy.

The youth made the appeal last week during a two-day regional youth consultative meeting at Moroto Core Primary Teachers’ College.

“Decision makers take the youth for granted and ignore them in decision making. They say elders are the right group to consult,” Grace Adome, a district youth councillor, observed.

Veronica Nakut, a volunteer with Restless Development, urged the youth to be creative and contribute to government development programmes.

National Youth Council chairperson Sammy Kavuma said the youth constitute 78% of Uganda’s population and most of them are unemployed.
