MAKERERE University will re-open next week on Friday if the academic, administrative and support staff agree to the proposals laid down by the university council.

The university was closed about two weeks ago following a lecturers strike.

Sources who attended the university council meeting yesterday disclosed that the council will first consult the executives of the academic, administrative and support staff associations to get consensus, before they can meet all staff.

The meeting also resolved that after meeting the three executives, “the council chairman will on Monday call all staff of the university and agree with them on the re-opening of the university.”

The council meeting yesterday followed a Cabinet sitting which discussed issues of Makerere, and later gave guidelines be followed in stablising the university.

The council chairman, Dr. Peter Wana Etyem, and the university spokesperson, could not be reached last night for detailed comments.

The lecturers and other staff members a fortnight ago staged a strike, demanding salary increment and immediate payment of their arrears and pension.

Students joined the strike, leading to the closure of the university.

Deliberations which have been ongoing show that payments of the staff’s sh16.7b may be effected in a month’s time. This followed an agreement between the university and Government to jointly sue the National Insurance Company.

The Cabinet has also appointed a team of lawyers from the Attorney General’s office to meet with the Makerere University legal team and review documents between the university and the insurance company.

Attorney General Peter Nyombi will lead the Government team, while the vice-chancellor, Prof. Venansius Baryamureeba, will lead the Makerere team.

“If the Government helps to clear outstanding arrears, lecturers will be paid by the end of this month,” a council member disclosed.
