At the same event, five Vision Group journalists won different awards in print, radio and TV categories.

Gerald Tenywa, a New Vision environment reporter, was named the best print journalist, while Titus Kakembo came third. Tenywa and Craig Kadoda of NTV, the winner in the television category, were offered air tickets by Brussels Airlines to any European destination of their choice.

Ben Jumbe of KFM, the winner in the radio category, was given an air ticket to Istanbul, Turkey. In addition, each winner in print, radio and television was given sh2m. The first and second runners-up in each category got sh1m, among other prizes.

Other top performers from Vision Group were Adella Orisaba of Radio West, who came third in the Radio category. Orumuri’s Deusi Ruhangariyo and Tiguragara Matojo were also recognised in the radio category.

A total of 31 journalists competed for the awards. Journalists were asked to submit articles before they were reviewed and the winners announced.

Tourism minister Ephraim Kamuntu presided over the ceremony at the Serena Hotel in Kampala. He advised that the media be used for good purposes like promoting Uganda as a tourism destination.

He also said the tourism ministry, which had suffered years of marginalisation in terms of funding from the Government, had become a fully-fledged ministry.

The annual event was organised by the Sustainable Tourism in the Albertine Rift.
