A 36-year -old man in Tororo district was sentenced to death on Tuesday over the murder of his grandmother.

The High Court in Tororo presided over by Justice Mike Chibita, convicted Malik Higenyi for killing Esther Namulwo, 70, in Namulemu village in Butaleja district.

While sentencing him, Chibita described Higenyi as a person of a brutal and cruel mind.

“Death is the only punishment provided by law for people with a cruel mind like you,” Chibita ruled, prompting Higenyi to break down in tears.

Court was compelled to hold a full trial after Higenyi denied killing the victim.

Tororo Resident State Attorney Annette Namatovu presented six witnesses during the trial.

Among the witnesses was Safiyat Nambubi, Higenyi’s wife.

Nambubi told court that they shared a house with the deceased.

She said on the fateful night, Higenyi picked a panga and headed to Namulwo’s room.

“I followed him to the room after Namulwo made an alarm. I found him standing beside the dead body with a blood-stained panga in his hand.”

‘‘He threatened to kill me. I sought refuge in the neighbourhood,’’ Nambubi said.

In a statement recorded at Butaleja Police Station, the convict had confessed killing his grandmother.
