Masindi Catholic diocese has launched the construction of a 100-bed sh7b hospital as a project to mark 100 years of its existance.

Masindi Catholic diocese has launched the construction of a 100-bed sh7b hospital as a project to mark 100 years of its existance.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the Centenary Memorial Hospital took place on Saturday during centenary celebrations for the diocese.

Over sh100m was raised for the construction of the hospital’s outpatient department. The function was graced by the Archbishop of Mbarara ArchDiocese, Paul Bakyenga.

Eriya Kategaya, the First Deputy Prime Minister who represented President Yoweri Museveni, handed over a sh30m contribution towards the project.

Also present were Second Deputy Prime Minister Henry Kajura and Bujenje Woman MP Kabakumba Masiko, who is also the Minister in Charge of the Presidency.

Ernest Kiiza, the Masindi municipality MP, said the hospital would be constructed in phases.

The first phase to cost sh600m, will cover the outpatient’s department and children’s wards.

Kiiza said materials had been collected and work would soon start for the hospital, which is expected to decongest Masindi Hospital.

Currently, the place has a dispensary that serves over 30,000 people.

In a speech read by Kategaya, President Museveni asked the church to promote government programmes.

He also asked them to fight ignorance and poverty and promote modernisation.

Museveni thanked the church for its role in improving health service delivery. He said it was important to build confidence in people.

Archbishop Bakyenga promised to solicit more funds towards the completion for the hospital from friends in Rome.
