A census to find out how many Rwandan refugees were in Uganda was carried out at the Oruchinga camp in Ankole. That was the first time that a census was carried out among the refugees since they began coming into Uganda.

The refugee officer I. M. Sanderson said at Mbarara that students were employed to carry out the census and the information obtained was processed at the District Commissioner’s office in Mbarara. The refugees were classed by sex and religion. He said that their inflow into Uganda had dropped considerably.

The latest figures had shown that from 20th to 23rd December, only 64 people with 27 heads of cattle had entered Uganda. The catholic mission in Ankole offered five cows to the refugees as a Christmas gift. However,  Sanderson said that the refugees had preferred clothes instead of the cows and thus the donation was used to buy clothes and garments.
