The East African Court of Justice will deliver its ruling on October 27th in a petition protesting the elections of members of the EA Legislative Assembly.

The East African Court of Justice will deliver its ruling on October 27th in a petition filed by the Democratic Party, protesting the procedure being followed in electing representatives of the East Africa Legislative Assembly.

The party says the way in which members of the East African Legislative Assembly are chosen is illegal. The party is seeking an interim order halting the process of electing new representatives.

DP says the procedure gives the ruling party – NRM, majority spots and that it (procedure) was discriminatory against small political parties. Party legal advisor Mukasa Mbidde says the current system was unfair, and does not promote democracy.

Currently, representatives to the assembly are chosen basing on the party numerical strength in Parliament with the NRM forwarding 7 Members and 2 for FDC.
