EDITOR: The threats of the education minister, Jessica Alupo, to punish teachers who want to continue with the strike demanding extra pay is insensitive.

Can the minister, for example, be sustained on a monthly salary of sh260,000 that a teacher earns in these hard times? What needs to be done is to negotiation with the teachers for a win-win outcome.

The Government's failure to honour the teachers' demand will significantly compromise the quality of education in the country.

The teachers are already being tortured economically and intimidating them cannot solve the problem. This country belongs to us all and its resources should be shared equitably.

The sooner an independent body is appointed to fairly determine salaries for all workers the better for this country. If this is not done we will see more strikes and hatred for political leaders will increase. There are no third rate citizens.
