Angry residents of Pece Teegwana in Gulu municipality closed Symmetry Road on Saturday. The residents used logs and stones to barricade the road. They said the road was slippery, with gullies and potholes.

The residents further divided the road into plots and planted millet, potatoes, sorghum, sugar cane, bananas and cassava.

They also dug fish ponds in the road. They vowed not to open it until the Pece division authorities fix it.

“This road has been in a poor state for long. We have decided to turn it into gardens and make money from the harvest of our crops,’’ they said.

Gulu district Police commander Denis Odoch urged the residents to abide by the law and desist from criminal acts like violence and extorting money from people using the road.

Gulu municipality mayor George Labeja told New Vision on Friday that all roads in the municipality would be repaired with support from the Uganda Roads Fund.

He said they would use sh320m to repair Symmetry, Keye and Tank/Labour Line roads. He said the road that stretches from Gulu University to Gulu Core PTC would also be repaired.

Meanwhile, in Laroo division, residents of Senior Quarters closed Peter Paul Opok Road, planted crops in the road and erected placards reading: “Welcome to Hyena Garden, Mr. Abongo, the LC3 chairman.”

On the Gulu-Juba highway, a fleet of vehicles reportedly got stuck at Awer in Amuru district for over 12 hours because of the muddy and slippery potholed road.
