OVER 300 elderly persons in Kibiga sub-county Kiboga district have received the first cash transfers under the Social Assistance Grants for Empowerment (SAGE) programme.

This was during the launch of the programme in the district at Kibiga sub-county headquarters on Friday.

It was presided over by the Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development, Syda Bbumba.

Kiboga district is among the 14 districts where the programme is being piloted.

Kibiga and Lwamata sub-counties were selected to pilot the programme in Kiboga.

SAGE is a new programme by the Government aimed at uplifting the social wellbeing of the elderly and vulnerable people. The programme is supported by the department for International Development, Irish Aid and Unicef.

Bbumba said the programme was meant to empower the disadvantaged citizens to take charge of their own wellbeing.

“With these regular and predictable incomes, vulnerable citizens will be able to afford basic needs. As a result, they will participate in their own welfare and contribute to their community,” she said.
