THE Uganda National Teachers Union is considering an option of taking government to court if IT doesn’t stop 'harassing and intimidating' teachers.

THE Uganda National Teachers Union is considering an option of taking government to court if it does not stop 'harassing and intimidating' teachers.

The Government said last Friday that it was considering hiring temporary staff with requisite academic qualifications to step in if the striking teachers do not turn up to teach.

A stern circular issued by the education ministry warned that absentees will be deemed to have resigned and that they should vacate institutional houses where applicable.

Micheal Matigi the Bushenyi district UNATU branch chairperson said this morning that the RDCs, DISOs, GISOs and police are forcing teachers to go to schools and even watch them teach pupils something he describes as absurd.

Matigi said that after consultation with teachers countrywide, the union has agreed to sue government if doesn’t stop infringing on their rights.

He notes that teaching is a noble job that must be done with willing hearts but not force.

Several government officials were yesterday deployed by government to oversee the opening of the 3rd term after teachers threatened not to report to school over unfulfilled demands. Government has threatened to sack those teachers who fail to report to their duty stations.
