The UPDF will recruit over 2,000 Local Defence Unit (LDU) personnel from districts along the Uganda-Democratic Republic of Congo border ahead of the November general elections in Congo.

The army chief, Gen. Aronda Nyakairima, made the disclosure while meeting leaders from Rukungiri, Kanungu, Kisoro and Kabale districts in Kabale town on Friday.

He said various rebel groups, like the ADF and Interahamwe in Congo, might use the election period to disrupt peace.

Nyakairima said he had visited border districts from Bundibugyo to Kisoro, meeting leaders and security chiefs over the recruitment of LDUs.

He cast out any fears that Uganda could be under eminent attacks from outside.

Nyakairima said the UPDF training wing had set up a camp in Hima, Kasese district to train LDU recruits.

Asked about the qualifications of the people they seek to recruit, Nyakairima said: “They should be aged between 18 to 39 years, well disciplined and with a minimum education of Senior Four.”

The presidential and parliamentary elections in Congo will be held on November 27.
