SECURITY around Kampala City was beefed up as the World remembered the September 11 bombing of the US Twin Towers and later other places around the World by Al Qaeda terrorists.

Lodovic Awitta, the in-charge technical department at the counter-terrorism police unit led a team of police officers that included police spokesperson, Judith Nabakooba to make spot checks on drinking joints and other places around the city.

They visited Uchumi Shopping Mall at the Garden City , the Ethiopian Village and De-Posh Restaurant in Kabalagala, Makindye House and Hakuna Matata among others.

The team however was surprised at the laxity of most of the busy joints in terms of security alertness where they found that many of them had several entry and exit points but had only one personnel.

Nabakooba noted that most places employed only one security guard who was either a man or woman and in several incidents the male guard left women unchecked and in others a female guard checked men as well, which she said was unacceptable.

Some places lacked enough metal detectors and some guards did not know how to operate them properly.

At Makindye House they directed the management to provide all the necessary gadgets or the place be closed.

The manager of the Ethiopian Village, Mami Mengesha assured the team that after the July incident, security had been tightened and there was no chance of another occurrence.

Security directed most joints to ensure more than one exit routes and each must be manned by a trained security guard.

The police also deployed foot patrols around the city and put mobile personnel on high alert fearing that terrorists normally target different places on the anniversary of the September 11 bombings.
