Bravo teachers for returning to class

The nation is because we are. That is the slogan of UNATU. The teachers’ strike has been a regional issue.

The nation is because we are. That is the slogan of UNATU. The teachers’ strike has been a regional issue.

In Uganda and Tanzania, teachers complained of low pay while in Kenya, they want their government to recruit more 280,000 teachers. However, if the Government is to achieve its vision, there is need look into the education system critically and the characteristics of the “educated people”.

As much as the Government has made remarkable achievements in expanding education, the introduction of UPE in 1997 and USE in 2007 came with challenges. There is corruption involved.

The numbers of children and students attending primary school rose to 9,537,971 by 2010 up from 2,038,824 in 1997 and 1,154,328 in secondary schools from 123,479 respectively. The increases do not correspond with increase in recruitment of teachers and expansion in terms of classrooms.

The agitation was, therefore, principally in the best interest of our brothers and sisters whom the constitution guarantees quality education. My worry is the timing. This is the term for UNEB exams for Primary Seven, Senior Four and Senior Six.

A teacher who wants students to prosper would not abandon them at this critical stage while some of our leaders still have a challenge of Senior Six certificates or its equivalent.

The Government should look into the matter of welfare more seriously. To the teachers, know that there are other professionals who are also not happy such as the police, nurses, soldiers. The Ministry of Education needs to help teachers free their minds of all existential worries.
