WOMEN parliamentarians want the death of Cecilia Nambozo, who died at Mbale Hospital, to be treated as a murder case and the culprits prosecuted in courts of law.

Addressing a press conference at Parliament yesterday, the chairperson of the Uganda Women Parliamentary Association, Betty Amongi, said they believe the doctors deliberately neglected Nambozo.

She was flanked by the chairperson of the Network of Women Ministers and Parliamentarians, Sylvia Ssinabulya and other MPs.

Nambozo, who was a teacher at Busamaga Primary School in Mbale municipality, went to the hospital on September 6 at 6:00am while in labour, but allegedly bled to death.

Barnabas Rubanza, a Police surgeon who carried out a post-mortem examination, said Nambozo died due to rapturing of the uterus.

On Monday, the Police in Mbale arrested four doctors and two nurses of Mbale Hospital over Nambozo’s death.

Amongi said they were going to work with FIDA Uganda to reinforce the Police investigation and ensure that the doctors and nurses responsible are prosecuted.

She also said they would petition the parliamentary social services committee to return from recess and summon health minister Dr. Christine Ondoa and the director of the hospital to explain how such an incident occurred.
