PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has warned that NRM leaders who side with the opposition to frustrate government programmes “will be sorted out or expelled from the party.”

Museveni, who is also the NRM chairperson, issued the warning yesterday while meeting party members to rally support for NRM flag-bearer in the Entebbe municipality parliamentary byelection, Patience Mubangizi.

The election is due on Septem¬ber 29.

A statement issued from State House yesterday quoted Museveni as saying that the biggest challenge now for the country was to have responsi¬ble and genuine leaders who know what to do and not who do ‘poko poko’ (empty talk).

“I know you have problems but they are a result of some of your leaders. The leaders who bring problems are in two groups; those in the opposition who have perfected lies, hy¬pocrisy and have never helped Uganda,” Museveni said.

He added that opposition leaders only paralyse work and turn around to criticise.

“They didn’t know that by sabotaging these programmes, they are sabotaging the lives of the ordinary people,” he added.

The President said the sec¬ond category includes leaders within the Movement party who support the opposition and those who keep quiet in the face of criticism and do not speak out.

Museveni explained that since the February elections, he had met NRM Members of Parliament and discussed vari¬ous issues with them.

“It is my own people who are among those frustrat¬ing government programmes, it does not make any sense. They will be expelled from the party and if need be, we will hold fresh elections,” said Museveni.

He gave a lengthy back¬ground to various challenges facing the country, including sugar and electricity shortages and others that had been af¬fected by the negative propa¬ganda.

The President criticised lead¬ers who get to Parliament and forget the real issues affecting ordinary people.

He urged residents of En¬tebbe municipality to unite in support of the NRM party flag-bearer, Patience Mubangizi, for development.

The municipal seat fell vacant after the High Court nullified the election of Mohammed Kawuma (Democratic Party) as MP in the February parliamen¬tary elections, citing electoral irregularities.

The meeting was attended by all NRM Members of Parlia¬ment in Wakiso district.
