DIRECTORS of Amman Industrial Tools and Equipment Limited yesterday did not appear before the public service and local government committee to explain why they failed to supply 70,000 bicycles meant for local council leaders.

Stanbic Bank officials also failed to show up as earlier directed. The parties failure to attend the session angered MPs.

“It appears some stakeholders are not aware that we are not calling them for a tea party but we are exercising the powers of the High Court.

“If they do not come to Parliament, it will be contempt of court,” committee vice-chairperson Raphael Magyezi warned.

On Monday, the committee tasked the former head of procurement at the Ministry of Local Government, Robert Mwebaze, to appear with the directors on Tuesday after he admitted that he had been in constant contact with them.

When he appeared yesterday, Mwebaze told the committee chaired by Kalungu district Woman MP Florence Kintu, that the Amman company directors had informed him that they would come, but later changed their minds.

He said the directors had told him that they had been advised by their lawyer to appear before the committee with him. He said the lawyer told him that he would come today (Wednesday).

Kintu asked the Government to give Mwebaze protection, saying that he had volunteered valuable information to the committee.
