FOUR children from one family were burnt to death by a night fire which gutted a room in which they were sleeping at Namwendwa village in Butagaya sub-county, Jinja district.

Jinja criminal investigations chief Ivan Kimalyo said the Monday incident occurred at about 9:00pm when the children were asleep.

The Police identified the deceased as Bridget Nabirye, 9, Wilson Kalikwira, 7, Wycliffe Mutabuuza, 5, and Asavin Mwayuya, 3, all children of Emmanuel Mukama, 28.

Kimalyo, who visited the scene, said Mukama reportedly left the children in the one-room house, to take the youngest child to their mother.

It is reported that the mother, Edisa Namulondo, had fled the home after a brawl with her husband and sought refuge at her parents’ home in Nawansi, a neighbouring village.

The children’s remains were discovered in a corner of the house where it is believed they tried to hide.

The LCI chairperson, Peter Mutabuza, said neighbours did not know about the fire until Mukama came back from Nawansi village and found his house burnt.

The charred bodies were taken to the Jinja referral hospital mortuary for postmortem.
