Nostalgia was the watermark at the centennial dinner dance to toast to Mwiri’s 100 years last Friday evening at Hotel Africana in Kampala.

It was a jovial evening as Mwiri old boys reminisced the good times but also plotted the resolve and determination to revive the school. Dr F.F. Tusubira, the chairman Board of Governors gave a moving recollection about the school and sealed it with a passionate appeal to the old boys to have a vision that their fore grandfathers had when they started the school a century ago.

He said old boys should also have a vision for Mwiri in the next century so that in future, the great grandchildren look back and “remember us for this”.

The venue was decorated to reflect the school’s traditional colours of yellow and blue. Most of the old students were accompanied by their spouses, also known as the honorary old girls of the school.

The presence of former teachers who travelled all the way from the UK to be part of this remarkable event gave the evening more spark. Protocol became a challenge as speaker after speaker scrabbled on how to introduce people in their respective capacities without jumbling up the protocol.

The chief guest, also an honorary old girl and the Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, pledged government support to fix the school infrastructure, but asked the old boys to do their part in reviving the values the school has been known for.

Dr Ruhakana Rugunda gave a moving story of how the school was one of the most hospitable places he has been to, recollecting how he used to spend his holidays with a hospitable family in Busoga instead of travelling the grueling long journey back to Kabale, over 400km from the school.

Daniel Ruhweza and Prof. Asavia Wandira, former Makerere University Vice Chancellor, gave moving recollections about their times at the school.

The function ended past 10:00pm when glasses were raised and every one toasted to 100 years of Mwiri and to the good health of the school. Later it was dancing and partying till late. The school will mark 100 years with a grand ceremony at the school campus in Jinja on Saturday.
