President Yoweri Museveni on Wednesday left for a two-day private visit to India. The President who is accompanied by his wife, the minister for Karamoja affairs Janet Museveni left aboard a Presidential jet.

The President who left shortly after addressing Ugandans on various issues in a message, appealed to traders to stop extorting money from the public through high prices, describing it as greed by the business people.

“When demand goes up they exploit the public. A kilo of sugar at factory price is still sh2800, but I hear some traders are charging as high as sh8000. Why? A bag of charcoal is sh80,000 when the traders buy it at 30,000, this is greed of the business people,” he said.

He said his focus is to strengthen import substitution because there is no need to import things that we can make and promote export expansion.

He reiterated Government’s commitment to work with Makerere University faculty of science to produce brickets (processed charcoal from biomass) and encourage NRM companies to distribute sugar without extorting money.

The President said because of the growing number of prosperous countries in Europe, Americas, China, India and Africa including Uganda, the demand for raw materials world- wide has skyrocketed.

“Now the whole world is changing, This means the demand for steel, copper in electricity wires, petroleum has increased making the cost of items for consumption and industrial use is very high,” he said.
