Teachers in Rubabo county, Rukungiri district have asked their Member of Parliament Paula Turyahikayo to lobby for the training of specialised teachers to handle the increasing number of HIV/AIDS pupils in their schools.

The call, was made by Alfred Bakutana the head teacher of Nyabitete Primary School, while meeting Turyahikayo in Katojo Primary School in Buyanja sub-county in Rukungiri last week.

Bakutana said there was an increasing number of pupils infected with HIV/AIDS yet teachers had not been trained to manage them.

“If the Government puts aside some funds and trains some teachers on how to handle HIV/AIDS infected pupils, then those teachers can pass on the skills to their colleagues,” he said.

Turyahikaho, who met all head teachers in their respective sub-counties, said she was concerned with the plight of girl and said she was ready to invest available resources and energy to ensure that girls were uplifted in Rubabo.

“The school dropout rate is worrying especially at primary level where most girls drop out before attaining any skills, which makes them dependent.

This must stop forthwith,” she said. Turyahikayo promised to take the teachers request to the parliamentary social services committee so that it could be included in next year’s budget.

She promised to give support to the 10 best candidates in each of the four sub-counties in Rubabo after the release of PLE results.
