FIM Africa technical advisor Jack Cheney has said that Victoria Raceway track Garuga is now ready for the Motocross of Africa Nations Championship that starts Friday with the registration of racers and scrutineering of bikes.

Cheney, also the race director and Clerk of the Course, disclosed this at the official launch of the event at Speke Resort in Munyonyo where Mountain Dew announced an sh50m package.

“For the period we have been here, we have worked on the track and it suits all categories of racers,” Cheney said.

At the same function, State Minister for Sports Peter Ogwang urged team Uganda to carry the Uganda flag high and urged the officials to take advantage of the event and promote tourism in the country. 

“Sports are important for communal Cohesion and Unity. It is against that background that the government is committed to investing much more in sports,” Ogwang said.

“Make sure that we can showcase what we have, and our visitors should be given good hospitality and visit the different parts of the country,” he added.

Mountain Dew Brand Manager Grace Namutebi pledged continued support for motocross in Uganda because it allows the young generation to exercise their talents.

“The sh50m support will cover media support and Logistics including tents for riders and officials,” Namutebi said.  

Dipu Ruparelia, the Federation of Motorsport Clubs' president thanked the government for providing an environment that enabled them to host the event following the postponement of it in 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic outbreak.

Uganda will field 87 racers under the stewardship of Alistair Blick, but only 45 will score points for Uganda while the rest will be individual racers. 

The continental event sponsored by Mountain Dew, Stanbic bank and Shell Advance is expected to have 140 racers from eight countries including, Zambia, Botswana, Kenya, Tanzania, Namibia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, and hosts Uganda.
