National swimmer Kirabo Namutebi continued her meteoric rise in the pool when she clocked 26.01 on Wednesday to rewrite her 50m freestyle record during the 15th CANA Africa Championships currently raging on in Tunisia.

Fresh from competing in back-to-back events since July in the World Championships which was followed by the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and thereafter the Islamic Solidarity Games in Konya, Turkey, where she had earlier lowered it to 26.42 in picking another silver; Namutebi was still in even better shape to shade off 41 microseconds in finishing second behind South Africa’s Inge Weidemann who won gold in 25.75. Algeria’s Nesrine Medjahed took the bronze in 26.12.

“I’m really happy with my performance and the new national record of 26.01. I’m always happy to represent my country and I’m grateful for the honour,” Namutebi said after her race.

She had earlier made 33.75 in finishing 5th overall in the final of the 50m breaststroke race which was won by another South African Emily Visagie in 33.22.

Uganda is also represented at the African showpiece by Tendo Mukalazi and Fadhil Saleh who made 24.17 and 24.32 respectively in finishing 12th and 16th overall out of 34 swimmers over the same distance (50m freestyle).

Mukalazi also competed in the 50m breaststroke where he clocked 30.46 while Saleh managed 55.44 in the 100m freestyle.
