National USSSA girls football record winner Kawempe Moslem started the USSSA Elite Schools tournament with a goal feast after walloping Sacred Heart Girls Gulu 6-0 in the first game at Mbarara High School grounds.

National team star Hadijah Nandago scored a hattrick with her counterpart Shakila Niyagahirwa (1) Docus Kisakye and Phiona Nabulime adding one each as Ishaka Victory beat Shuuku Vocational 3-1.

"We are using this event as a build-up to the return of the FUFA Women Super League early next month and we want to make a good start from here so that when the league is on, we have worked on the many weaknesses that we observed in the first round," said team captain Samali Nakcwa.

In the boys’ football, Kawempe Moslem saw off Standard High Zzana with a 2-1 win, while Ryakasinga CHE beat Good Shepherd 4-1 as St Kagwa Bushenyi beat Jinja SS 1-0.

In Volleyball girls, national champions St Elizabeth beat Boni Consilii Isingiro 3-1 while Katikamu SDA, the defending champions of the event, saw off Immaculate Heart 3-0.

In the boys’ category, national and event defending champions Standard High School Zzana beat St Augustine and St Jerome 3-0 respectively while Buremba SS beat the hosts Mbarara High 3-1 and St Jerome 3-0 respectively.

There were late games in handball and netball because of the official opening ceremony presided over by Physical Education and Sports commissioner Rev Canon Duncans Mugumya.

The games continue tomorrow with group games and will climax on Saturday with final games and awards.
