Museveni in DR Congo for peace and security summit

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is in neighbouring DR Congo to attend a two-day peace and security summit.

More specifically, it is the 10th Summit of the Heads of State and Government of the Framework Agreement for Peace, Security and Co-operation for the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Region.

Museveni arrived at Kinshasa International Airport on Thursday, accompanied by former Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi.

Mbabazi is the head of the African Global Security Foundation, a continental security think tank.

They were received by the DR Congo Deputy Prime Minister Jene Sama Lukonde, sports minister Serge Conde, and security chiefs.

On the Ugandan side, Museveni was welcomed by John Mulimba, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs (regional affairs), the Special Presidential Advisor of Defence and Security, Lt. Gen. Proscovia Nalweyiso, and other government officials.

Museveni joined his counterparts, Denis Sassou-Nguesso (Congo-Brazzaville) and Joao Manuel Gonçaves Laurenço (Angola).

The meeting is expected to attract heads of state and representatives from the 13 countries under the Great Lakes Region.

They are Uganda, DR Congo, Burundi, Congo-Brazzaville, Ethiopia, Gabon, South Africa, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Zambia and Tanzania.

The summit being held at State House Kinshasa will also see President Museveni hand over chairmanship of the mechanism to the host president, Felix Tshisekedi.
