The Anti-Corruption court in Kololo, Kampala has convicted former Principal accountant at the office of the prime minister of embezzling sh306m.
Justice Lawrence Gidudu convicted Geoffrey Kazinda saying prosecution had proved beyond reasonable doubt charges of embezzlement.
The court, however, acquitted Kazinda’s co-accused Isaiah Oonyu who was assistant accountant.
Gidudu agreed with the prosecution that Kazinda stole the money, claiming it was meant for workshops and consultative meetings both within Kampala and in northern Uganda.
Chief state attorney Harriet Angom asked court to sentence Kazinda to a deterrent sentence saying he has become habitual offender.
Kazinda asked court for a lenient sentence. He said since 2012 he has been sentenced to prison over offenses arising from the same police investigations. Court is yet to deliver the sentence but Kazinda could spend an extra 14 years in prison or a fine not exceeding sh6.7m or both.
Previous jail terms
Last year Justice Margaret Tabiya of the Anti-Corruption Court convicted and sentenced Kazinda to 25 years in jail over forgery and causing financial loss of sh20b to government. He was ordered to refund sh19.2b. He was found guilty of forging security papers in order to steal money from government.
