The African Union (AU) has called on global south nations to continue creating partnerships that will effectively address the issues on the African continent and equally have partnerships that will deepen the delivery of tangible outcomes.

The call was made at the three-day second high-level forum on the South-South and Triangular Co-operation (SSTC) organised by AU Commission deputy chairperson Dr Monique Nsanzabaganwa at the Speke Resort Munyonyo in Kampala via a recorded video.

The event ran from January 17-19, 2023

Nsanzabaganwa, who thanked the Government of Uganda, the United Nations Development Programme and the Islamic Development Bank, reminded the global dignitaries how Africa was the only region that had submitted in writing a common position as a proposal to see the Sustainable Development Goals which is about 80% in convergence with agenda 2063 and agenda 2030 which was based on a mapping exercise conducted by the AU commission in 2015.

The AU is currently reviewing Agenda 2063 strategic partnerships for the first decade to establish the creation of more effective partnerships that are expected to enable improved synergy and co-ordination in the financing and implementation of the development frameworks at the national regional and continental levels.

The review process will also look towards ensuring that national resources are appropriately and more effectively allocated to drive development over the next 10 years.

More than 20 country representatives were in attendance with panel detailed topics ranging from trade and industrialisation for value addition, science and technology, agriculture, economic resilience and finance for development, accelerating agenda 2063, the role of the private sector, establishing the international institute of research and training, the impact of SSTC on women and youth, building national ecosystems, implementation of (Buenos Aires Plan of Action) BAPA +40 and the global regional context of the south-south co-operation.

In regard to human capital development and technical co-operation, AU recorded an increase in these two sectors in the past four decades.

To concretise this achievement, AU outlined how the current partnerships of Africa-south America partnership, the Africa-Arab partnership and the forum for Africa-China co-operation have enabled this advancement on the continent.

In preparation for the 5th Arab-Africa summit in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in November 2023, Nsanzabaganwa called on both the AU and the Arab neighbours to mobilise resources and capacities to build sustainable and resilient societies.

“The persistent challenges to enhance Africa’s economic and social resilience alongside institutional preparedness for shocks require an inclusive approach to engage women and youth in project making and project implementation,” she said.

Nsanzabaganwa expressed hope in the Africa medical supply platform which helped deliver COVID-19 vaccines in Africa through a pool and revealed how the same partnerships have been extended to tourism, investments, energy and other economic sectors.
