Leaders from the Karamoja-Teso region have embarked on getting a solution to stop the insecurity in the Karamoja sub-region, mainly caused by cattle rustling.

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Vice Chairperson Karamoja, Simon Aleper, said the issues of insecurity need to be resolved permanently to pave way for economic development in the region.

Aleper made the remarks during a meeting of elders and MPs at Fortune Arrow Security offices in Kampala on Monday.

He said insecurity can be dealt with by involving elders and MPs to come up with guiding tools that will settle issues amicably without losing life and property.

He also noted that these issues would be solved properly by engaging the people at the grass-root level.

“The purpose of this meeting is to seek peace regarding Karamoja and its neighbouring regions. The issue of insecurity has brought us here to forge a long-lasting solution to achieve peace in the area. We are tired of losing people’s lives and properties” Aleper said.

He promised that they were also going to hold discussions with the Acholi and Lango leaders over the matter.

Mike Mukula, the Vice Chairman of the NRM Eastern Uganda hailed President Yoweri Museveni for his quick intervention in the matter by sending troops to restore peace in the region.

“It is important that while we are changing the mindset of people on the ground, we need also to listen to their leaders,” Mukula said.

He noted that if the region is peaceful, Ugandans will work freely for the development of the region.

Prof. Francis Omaswa urged all political leaders in the affected region to fight cattle rustling that has caused internal displacement,” Omaswa said.
