Over 70 children with disabilities received free medication courtesy of Philomera Hope Foundation in conjunction with Katalemwa Cheshire Home in Kalangala district.
Children from different islands across the 64 inhabited ones were on Wednesday diagnosed and treated for different diseases.
Joseph Kayiira, the team leader at Philomera Hope Foundation, said that persons with disabilities in Kalangala have challenges with transportation to specialised hospitals such as CORSU in Entebbe and Katalemwa thus their reason for holding these outreaches.
"We will prepare a medical outreach every quarter to monitor, and treat persons with disabilities in far distant islands of Kalangala district. We want to create a conducive environment for persons with disabilities whose specialised medications are inaccessible in these islands," said Kayiira.
Charles Kateregga, the district councillor for persons with disabilities, said Kalangala's geographical set-up has hindered his people as far as access to medical care is concerned, access to education is a proverb yet all children have equal rights.
"We call upon the Government of Uganda for an intervention into medical-related issues for persons with disabilities in Kalangala where access is difficult compared to other areas," said Kateregga.
Persons with disabilities extended their appreciation towards this medical outreach which they said will in the future improve their well-being and ease access to medical services in Kalangala.
