Uganda Martyrs University tightens emphasis on entrepreneurship, ICT

According to the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Patrick Edrin Kyamanywa, the university is set to review its programs and incorporate entrepreneurship as a longitudinal module instead of only a first-semester introductory module.

As a strategic response to contemporary socio-economic challenges, Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) has strengthened its commitment to entrepreneurship and ICT. 

According to the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Patrick Edrin Kyamanywa, the university is set to review its programs and incorporate entrepreneurship as a longitudinal module instead of only a first-semester introductory module.

The university is also going to first test the ICT competencies of its new staff before recruiting them. And for those already in the system, a compulsory skills assessment is going to be done to identify their training needs.

Kyamanywa made the pronouncement during the celebration of the university’s 29th anniversary. 

The function during which the UMU fraternity also commemorated 58 years of the canonization of the Uganda Martyrs took place at the university’s main campus at Nkozi, in Mpigi district, on Tuesday.

The colourful celebration started with a thanksgiving mass presided over by the Archbishop of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Kampala, the Most Rev. Paul Ssemogerere, who asked the students, alumni and all the stakeholders of UMU to be champions of peace, unity and justice.

Like the Uganda Martyrs (the patron saints of the university), Ssemogerere said, members of the UMU fraternity are obliged to preach the gospel in their words and actions.

During the function, the university honoured a number of its outstanding governing council members, members of staff, students and alumni for their contributions to UMU’s growth and greatness.

Those who were awarded include Rev. Prof. John Chrysostom Maviiri (former Vice-chancellor), Prof. Michael Mawa (a pioneer alumnus), Archbishop Paul Ssemogerere (the university’s patron), Audes Tiragana and Mrs. Josephine Namugumya Kasiita, just to name a few.

The function ran under the theme: Agility, Flexibility and Creativity towards Transformational Change.
