Tourism benefits several sections of the economy and continues to contribute about 10% to the world’s Gross Domestic Product.

As sustainable consumption and production patterns are central to sustainable tourism, Uganda is determined to benefit from one of the world's fastest-growing trade, a great source of foreign exchange and employment.

Under the theme: Rethinking Tourism, the Ekkula Pearl of Africa Tourism Awards, recognised the celebrated players who have proved resilient and continue to make Destination Uganda competitive.

Among the winners was Ethiopian Airlines in the aviation sector. Nyege Nyege was voted the best event after the two Covid-19 Lockdowns. On their heels came Nkuringo Safari Lodge for being the best among new accommodation facilities. John Hunnwick was hailed for popularising the climbing of Mount Rwenzori, as Amos Wekesa was voted best tourism personality.
