KCCA | GARBAGE | TRUCKS

KAMPALA - Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) on Friday commissioned 10 new garbage compactor trucks, 5 skip loader trucks, 5 cesspool emptiers and 5 tractors as part of a wider effort in solid waste management in the city.

The new garbage compactor trucks bring the number to 22, meaning averagely, each of the five divisions of Kampala shall have at least 4 trucks.

“Population and economic growth bring about an increase in waste generation. currently, Kampala generates 2,500 tonnes of waste daily,” said Dorothy Kisaka, the Executive Director KCCA at the commissioning Ceremony.

The Executive director also revealed KCCA’s plans for the newly acquired landfill in Dundu Mukono. 

“Recently, we acquired 135 acres of land in Dundu Mukono to set up a waste recycling plant and relieve the Kiteezi Landfill,” she said, adding, “In collaboration with the Ministry of Health, a medical waste handling facility is being set up there, occupying 5 of the 135 acres. This facility is now at the roofing stage.”

The grand plan for KCCA at the Dundu recycling and dumping site is to build access roads, fence the site, install utilities, and build office blocks, waste treatment and at least one working face/landfill cell.

KCCA also announced its action plan to have equitable and universal access to safely managed sanitation and hygiene in the City by 2030 through;

I. Establishing a robust citywide environmental management coordination, regulation monitoring and pollution management system.

II. Establish a responsive community-based and public health surveillance and education system

III. Increase in safely managed municipal waste from 50% to 80% by 2025 and

IV. Increase in safely managed faecal sludge from 60% to 80% by 2025.

The commissioning event was held at Naguru in Kampala and was attended by the Lord Mayor, Erias Lukwago and other local area leaders including Nakawa division Mayor and area MP Joel Senyonyi.
