KAMPALA - The First Lady and Minister for Education and Sports, Janet Museveni has lauded the spirit of social responsibility and giving back to the community exhibited by the Kingdom of Belgium through Enabel.

The Kingdom of Belgium provided sh9.6b to fund the construction and rehabilitation of Uganda Technical College Kyema in Masindi district as well as Millennium Business School and St Simon Peter’s Vocational Training Centers in Hoima.

Addressing the people who gathered to witness the commissioning, Peter Ogwang, the state minister for Education and Sports who represented the First Lady, Janet Museveni, described the project as an excellent representation of what education is.

“We are proud of the partnership we have had with Belgium in promoting access to quality and relevant education, especially in the areas of skilling, teacher training and capacity enhancement programmes.

Enabel with support from Belgium and other partners (Ireland, GIZ, European Union) have been walking with us throughout this journey under the Support to Skilling Uganda (SSU) project,” noted Ogwang.

The minister said that Government is happy that the partnership is continuing even beyond the Albertine region.

“Government is highly committed to enhancing our bilateral relations aimed at transforming education and improving livelihoods of our population,” Ogwang said.

Speaking at the commissioning, Enabel Resident Representative, Tom Vanneste, said, that Belgium will continue to stand with the leaders and people of the Albertine region in their effort to develop their region.

The project provides similar infrastructures support to 4 other vocational training institutions namely Kasese Youth Polytechnic, St Joseph Technical institute Virika in Fort portal, Nakapiripiri Technical Institute and St Daniel Comboni Polytechnic in Moroto.

Besides infrastructure development, the SSU project built the capacity of instructors to enable them to train better. It also provides vocational education scholarships to over 12,000 youth, women and girls.

Richard Alikira, the principal of St Simon Peter’s Vocational Training Centers said that these projects have helped the young people in the region to get the necessary skills that are needed by the oil companies around.
