Old students of Nyakasura School can now raise their heads high for they have a football league like several of their colleagues from the other traditional schools.

The long-awaited league got underway on Sunday February 5, 2023, amidst excitement at Henry's Sports Centre in Kampala city's suburb of Kabalagala.

Though only nine teams turned up out of 12 that were expected on match day one, the beginning has been described by participants as promising. The main aim of starting the tournament, according to Geoffrey Maate, the league's legal advisor who served as head prefect at the Nyakasura School, was bringing the alumni together.

"Besides the good game display and the excitement, I'm happy to note that our league has begun meeting its biggest goal of uniting the young alumni of the Nyakasura School. People have been able to meet old friends and former schoolmates," Maate said.

"Initially, everything revolved around the older alumni, people who studied at the school in the 1990s or before. The young boys and girls are now able to meet and share the good memories at the school," he added.

The unwavering desire for each team to win made day one competitive, producing some nerve fledgling encounters that predict that this league is surely going to be one to watch now that it is even in the capital city.

There were some spine-tingling moments between the league's heavyweights, SC Rugumayo and Blast Furnace, which produced the league's first red card. Former Tooro United striker Deus Katuramu was impressive as he inspired team Blast Furnace to a hard-fought 2-0 victory against the Professors, SC Rugumayo.

"Everything was entertaining, interesting and I can really say that it was a fantastic beginning,"  Engogo FC's Isaac Kasoro, whose team won all their two matches on Sunday, said.

"Byaro FC's Joan Kabayaga said: "It was full of fun, we got to meet former colleagues after a long time. This was an amazing experience beyond what was displayed on the pitch".

On the other hand, Banyunye recovered from a 2-0 loss to SC Rugumayo in their opening match to beat Amairindi FC in a highly contested encounter that ended 2-0. This sparked off some incredible scenes of jubilation from boys and girls in black and white.

Paul Mujwara, the chairperson of Banyunye, said his team is happy with one win from the opening two matches though he wasn’t impressed by the way they performed.

"Generally, it's been an interesting opening day though as team Banyunye, we did not meet our expectations. Our goal was to win every match but still, we are happy with our performance on day one," he said.

Matchday two, according to the league's chairperson, Ronald Karuhanga will be played in the first week of April and will still take place in Kampala at a venue he is yet to disclose
