NARO gets new governing council

Government has appointed 16 agricultural experts to the National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO) governing council.
The team to be chaired by Prof Wiliam Olaho Mukani, also includes ex-officials like Dr Martin Patrick Ongol, the executive secretary of Uganda National Council for Science and Technology, Maj Gen David Kasura Kyomukama the agriculture ministry’s permanent secretary, Dr Ramathan Ggobi, the finance permanent secretary, Dr Samuel Mugasi, the executive director NAADS and Dr Ambrose Agona the director general NARO.
Other members are; Prof James Kajete, Dr Sylvester Dickson Baguma, Dr John Wasige Ejeit, Kenneth Katungisa, Rehema Nanvuma Wandere, George Ewdard Onya, Jolly Masika Kateeba, Sharon Akullo Atoo, Susan Awino and Olivia Nankunda Mpuuga.
This was revealed by the ICT and national guidance minister, Dr Chris Baryomunsi, to journalists at the Uganda Media Centre this Tuesday (June 21).
“The law provides for a big council of 16 members and the team constitutes experts in agriculture and related fields. We expect them to do a good job as they strengthen NARO,” Baryomunsi said.
Their term is expected to run till 2025.
The National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO) is an agency of the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) with the mandate to coordinate and oversee all aspects of public-funded agricultural research in Uganda.
Established as a body corporate by the National Agricultural Research Act of 2005, NARO comprises a Governing Council, a Secretariat and 16 Public Agricultural Research Institutes spread across the country.
NARO is mandated to undertake research in all aspects of agriculture including crops, livestock, fisheries, forestry, agro-machinery, natural resources and socio-economics.
