KAGADI - Over 2,000 people from two parishes of Kamina and Ndaiga in Ndaiga sub-county Kagadi district are living in fear of land eviction threats by landlords.

According to residents, it is estimated that over 1,200 hectares are covered under three land titles that were processed in 2013 and 2015 and are alleged to have been sold to a top-ranked UPDF officer.

The land in question consists of a community Primary school, a public toilet, a market, three churches, and a demonstration garden for NAADS among others which they believe may lose soon if the government has not intervened.

Residents fear that they might lose their food and cash crops like cocoa, Coffee, and Bananas, among others.

According to local leaders in Ndaiga Sub County, several reports have been made to different offices in the district but in vain.

They accuse the Kagadi Resident District Commissioner, Nicholas Kamukama, of conniving with the Land title owners to cause panic and effect eviction to the people of Ndaiga.

They said they are ready to mobilize their residents to fight for their land.

Hasson Mumbere, the NRM chairperson Ndaiga Sub County said people have lost morale towards work and that they had formed PDM groups which he said have collapsed.

“I am requesting the president to intervene in our land issues so that NRM doesn’t lose support. If this is not cleared, we shall lose support,” Mumbere said.

RDC Kamukama said he got connections to the agents of the landlord and proved that the titles were genuine.

Kamukama said he asked the landlord to engage his tenants so that they can peacefully co-exist though they did not have any document proving ownership of land.

“These people, who are saying that they own this land, do not have any document to prove that they own the land. Some of them say they have lived on this land for 5 years but they don’t have purchase agreements,” Kamukama told New Vision.
