Police are hunting for a group of thugs that raided the ancestral home of the Late Archbishop Cyprian Kizito Lwanga at Kyabakadde village, in Kyampisi sub-county, Mukono district Friday morning.

"The territorial Police of Nagalama are investigating the incident of aggravated robbery that occurred today around 1:00 am," Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, said in a statement Friday.

“In the investigation of the incident, the police have established that unidentified thugs, who were more than 15 in number, armed with pangas, sticks and breaking implements, dressed in plain clothes wearing face masks, attacked the residence at night,” Owoyesigyire said.

Archbishop Lwanga, 68, who died of heart complications on April 3, was on April 8, buried inside Rubaga Cathedral.

According to police, the thugs gained access to the Late Archbishop's residence after cutting the perimeter fence.

Owoyesigyire said the thugs attacked the occupants in the house and robbed mobile phones, and cash amounting to sh250,000 from two victims, whom they later tied with ropes before they fled.

However, the police were able to recover some exhibits at the scene and also arrested one suspect, Owoyesigyire revealed, adding that the hunt for the rest is ongoing.

“The suspect, who lives in the same home, went missing during the robbery. He resurfaced at 6:00 am, creating suspicion that he might have been behind the robbery. He is still under investigations,” the police publicist stated.

Owoyesigyire said they have recorded all relevant statements, and that investigations are ongoing to have the rest of the suspects arrested and produced before courts of law.
