Lt. Col. Edith Nakalema, the head of the State House Anti-Corruption (SHACU) has welcomed with joy a ‘miracle baby that was swapped, and his parents were given a dead body.

Miracle Aiden is one year and 25 days, he was born on March 20, 2020, at Kamic Medical Clinic in Kawempe near the government-aided Kawempe Referral Hospital.

He was named Miracle by his parents, Rogers Egonga and mother Glorious Awino after they claimed him from Pastor Raymond Magge and his wife Patience Biwaga of the Yesu Akwagala Ministries in Katooke, Kawempe division.

The unfortunate couple was told on reporting to the clinic that the mother would undergo a C-section and demanded sh500,000 for the service. After pleading, Egonga said he paid sh300,000 although inside him he knew his wife was capable of having a normal delivery.

He says he was later shocked when a clinical officer, George Ssenkoomi, also the owner of the clinic physically called him to the theatre and showed him a dead body of a baby, that he says looked older, but dead.

“The baby was on oxygen but I was told it was dead and he told me that that was my baby. I felt so bad because I was waiting to see my firstborn alive,” Egonga said, one year after the incident.

He added that he was later given the body and took it to Nakalama, his home village for burial, and returned to the clinic a day later to look after his wife who was still admitted.

He explained that one of the doctors who had checked his wife on admission walked to the room and congratulated the couple for having a new baby.

“I was shocked by the doctor’s utterances because we had even buried the baby. When I told him the baby had died, he was shocked and walked out, crestfallen,” Egonga explained the incident as if it happened yesterday.

The story was so fresh in his mind that at some point he became emotional.

The doctor, according to Egonga, returned minutes later with three other doctors and briefly interviewed him, picked his contact and that of his wife, and left, seemingly troubled.

On discharge, before they reached home, the doctor called him and asked to meet him.

“He told me he had come with Good News. He told me that my baby was alive but was given to another couple and I was instead given a dead body. I was shocked and troubled,” he said.

With the doctor’s assistance, he reported the matter to Kawempe Police Station, and the pastor and his wife were arrested. The wife was found breastfeeding the baby.

Egonga said at first the police helped him but after two days, the couple was released and they started shunning him.

The officer in charge asked him to negotiate with the clinic owner and accept a bribe, which he rejected.

“My story was aired on Bukedde TV and this is when Afande Nakalema saw it and looked for my contact and called me to her office,” he said, adding that although everyone had started avoiding him, he was helped and the suspects were arrested.

He appealed to Anti-corruption to help many more vulnerable people who go through the same ordeals so that they can achieve justice.

“I came here to introduce our baby to Afande Nakalema, she played a big role. We are happy with our baby and we thank everyone who helped us,” he said and applauded the doctor who became brave and disclosed to him about the entire conspiracy.

He named the baby Miracle after the trying moments they went through.

Nakalema who was jovial on receiving the baby said it was so fulfilling to get involved in a life-saving mission and said it was shocking to learn that a young couple had been given a dead body and their baby given to another couple.

“For us at SHACU, we do not limit complaints, we handle anything reported to us and we respond as soon as possible when the complaint reaches our desk,” she said and congratulated the couple.

She added that it was so saddening to see the story from the Bukedde TV news bulletin, a sister Vision Group platform and quickly swung into action.
