The National Unity Platform (NUP) is set to hold a two-day retreat to discuss party matters as well as the race for Speaker of the 11th Parliament.

The party spokesperson Joel Senyonyi said that the retreat was supposed to take place last week but was postponed following the death of the Archbishop of Kampala Dr Cyprian Kizito Lwanga.

While addressing journalists at the party headquarters in Kamwokya on Tuesday, Senyonyi stated that they have resolved to have their retreat this Friday and Saturday.

With over 60 MPs-elect, NUP will be the leading opposition party in the 11th Parliament which starts work next month.

Commenting about the government's proposal for new taxes and increasing some existing ones, Senyonyi urged the government to first present the accountability of the taxes collected from Ugandans.

The Ministry of Finance announced among others new taxes measures including annual road licence for cars, sh1,464 tax on each kilogram of maize bran exported new tax on leaf tobacco exports (sh2,928 per gram), and 12% tax on internet data other than for medical and educational services, among others,  which has sparked off public outrage.
