The national cycling team will camp in Kisoro for three weeks as they prepare for the Sierra Leone Road Race championship in April.

Pastor Patrick Ssemambo, the coordinator of the team and chairman of Kampala City Cycling Club disclosed this on Saturday during a media briefing to honouring the team the team finished fifth in Africa Continental Cycling Road Race Championship in March 3-8 in Egypt.

“What the coach identified in Egypt is that we are not good when it comes to climbing lanes, and in these races, they look at challenging terrains that include hilly areas. So, we are taking a team to Kisoro which is hilly to train from there,” Ssemambo said.

In Egypt, Uganda despite using inferior bikes finished fifth overall out of 38 countries that competed in the event.

“Our appeal is to the corporate world to buy us up-to-date bikes so that we can compete favourably in international events,” he added.

The latest technology competing bicycle (F12 and DIZ2) costs between sh20m-30m and in Uganda, only Masaka Cycling Club has one bicycle.

The team was supported by the Coordinator of the Operation Wealth Creation General Salim Saleh to a tune of sh123m.

The assistant secretary of the Uganda Cycling Association Juliet Namatovu added that they are also working hard to have a full women team.

“Our focus is to win medals in the women and mixed team category, so we have identified three more ladies to join Mary Aleper who was the best performer in Egypt,” Namatovu said.

The team is also preparing for the world championships in September.
